Smartwatch buying basics: what to look for

Compatibility, battery life and sensors decide whether a smartwatch fits your life. A checklist before you buy.

A smartwatch can track your health, show notifications and even pay at the counter. But the best one for you depends mostly on your phone and your habits.

1. Check phone compatibility first

Some watches work only with one phone ecosystem; others work with both Android and iPhone but with fewer features on one side. Make sure notifications, replies and health syncing work with your phone.

2. Decide how much battery you need

  • 1–2 days: full-featured smartwatches with bright screens, apps and payments
  • 5–14 days: simpler smartwatches and fitness-focused models
  • Weeks: basic fitness bands

If you want sleep tracking, a watch you must charge every night is less practical.

3. Pick the health features you'll really use

Most watches track steps, heart rate and sleep. Many add blood-oxygen readings, GPS for runs and cycling, and stress estimates. Some offer ECG or temperature sensing, depending on the region. Remember these are wellness tools, not medical devices, unless specifically certified.

4. Built-in GPS

Runners and cyclists benefit from GPS in the watch itself, so the route is recorded without carrying the phone.

5. Durability and comfort

Look at water resistance (5 ATM handles swimming), screen protection and strap options. Try the size on your wrist — a watch you find bulky will end up in a drawer.

6. Updates and app support

A watch that receives software updates for several years will keep working with new phones and apps.

The bottom line

Choose compatibility first, then battery life, then features. A simple watch you wear every day is more useful than a powerful one that is always on the charger.
