Working from a laptop at the dining table is fine for a day. For months, a few changes make a big difference to comfort and focus. Here they are in order of impact.

1. Raise your screen

Looking down at a laptop for hours strains your neck. Put the top of the screen roughly at eye level with a laptop stand or a stack of books, then add an external keyboard and mouse. This is the cheapest, most effective upgrade.

2. A supportive chair

Your feet should rest flat, knees roughly at hip height, and your lower back supported. If a new chair is out of budget, a cushion for your lower back and a footrest help a lot.

3. An external monitor

A second screen is the biggest productivity boost for most office work — documents on one side, calls or references on the other. For a 24–27 inch monitor, full HD or QHD resolution is plenty; a USB-C monitor can charge your laptop with one cable.

4. Light

Face a window or place it to the side, not behind you, so your face is visible on calls and the screen has no glare. A simple desk lamp with warm light helps in the evening.

5. Sound for calls

Built-in laptop microphones pick up the whole room. A headset or earbuds with a good microphone make you much clearer on calls — and noise-cancelling models help you concentrate.

6. Reliable internet and power

Place your router close to where you work, or use a mesh system. Where power cuts are common, a small UPS for the router keeps you online through short outages.

7. Small things

  • Cable clips or a tray to keep the desk clear
  • A webcam if your laptop's is poor quality
  • Regular breaks: stand up and look into the distance every half hour

The bottom line

Start with posture — stand, keyboard, chair — then add a monitor. Most other gadgets are nice-to-have.
